ROYAL PALM BEACH — A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy shot a woman in the leg early Sunday during a traffic stop in Royal Palm Beach after deputies say she tried to flee in a stolen pickup truck.

The sheriff’s office said deputies had stopped the stolen U-Haul pickup on the 200 block of Parkwood Drive about 4 a.m. As they were detaining a man driving the truck, the female passenger “slid into the driver’s seat and fled the scene,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The woman, later identified as Ginger Taylor, 31, was found with the truck about an hour later at the nearby Royal Inn Hotel on Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. There, deputies say Taylor struck a deputy with the vehicle as she attempted to flee once more.

The deputy fired at the vehicle, authorities said. Taylor drove north but crashed 7 miles away, striking the fence of a house at the intersection of Royal Beach Beach and Persimmon boulevards, according to the news release.

Taylor was arrested while fleeing on foot and was taken to a hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound. She was later booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, reckless fleeing and eluding, aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and resisting with violence.

The deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The man driving the van, identified as James Boswell, 27, was arrested in connection with driving the stolen U-Haul. He also is facing charges on an out-of-state warrant, the sheriff’s office said late Sunday.

The incident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with assistance from the sheriff’s office and the State Attorney’s Office. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, a standard move while deputy-involved shootings are investigated.

The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the deputy Sunday.
