A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in Jurupa Valley, the department reported.

The deputy was shot during a traffic stop in the 3900 block of Golden West Avenue just before 2 p.m., the sheriff’s department said on Facebook.

Officers then chased a suspect on Interstate 15 and State Route 60. The pursuit ended with the suspect dead after a shootout on I-15 in Norco, said a person who has been briefed on the incident. The aftermath of that shootout was shown on television news.

The deputy was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, said the person who had been briefed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

The suspect eluded deputies for about an hour and a half after the shooting. And when located after 3 p.m., the driver fled.

Neither the suspect nor the deputy who was killed have been identified publicly. A long procession of police cruisers and motorcycles accompanied the hearse carrying the deputy’s body from Riverside Community Hospital to the sheriff’s coroner’s office in Perris.

Sheriff Chad Bianco planned to hold a press conference at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
